During an attempt to take a close-up photo of a shark in shallow waters off the coast of Tomsen-Kou, on the islands of Turks and Caicos in the Caribbean, a woman from Canada, 55-year-old Natalia Ross, was bitten on both her arms. The incident occurred on the morning of February 7. Reports indicate that the woman was also injured in the leg. Witnesses described that the woman's husband attempted to help her right before they managed to get her to shore and subsequently into a helicopter for treatment. The Turks and Caicos government confirmed that the shark was approximately 6 feet long (about 2 meters), but the exact species has not been determined.

After the incident, authorities closed the beach until noon on February 9, as it was found that the shark had moved into deeper waters. The waters around the islands of Turks and Caicos host a variety of shark species, including tiger sharks, bull sharks, great hammerhead sharks, and reef sharks.
